If you would like to access your student Google Account from home with a personal computer, it is recommended that you use the Google Chrome browser, and create a new "profile" or "person" to keep your school browsing separate from your personal browsing.
Creating a New Profile
In Google Chrome, click the People menu and choose Add Person… (A).
A new window will open, and you will be prompted to sign in with a Google account. Sign in using your school account. After agreeing to the prompts, you will see your user icon in the top-right corner of the Chrome window (B). This icon indicates that this browser window is using your school account profile.
Important: While you are using your school account profile, you will have access to school-provided bookmarks and extensions, but you will also have some school browsing restrictions and filters applied. These restrictions will only be applied while browsing with your school account profile, however
Please only use your school account profile for school work. All personal browsing should be done using a different Chrome profile. The next section describes how to switch back to a personal profile.
Switching Profiles in Chrome
You can switch between profiles in Chrome by clicking the People menu and choosing another profile, or by clicking your user icon in the top-right corner of the chrome window and choosing a different profile. If you don't have any other profiles listed, you can add another by following the steps above, using a personal Google account to sign in instead of your school account.
This will switch you to another Chrome browser window which is using this profile, or open a new window if one doesn't already exist. Your previous window, using the other profile, will remain open in the background. This way you can easily switch between profiles to access your personal Gmail and a school Google Doc, for example.
It can be easy to get confused about which profile you are currently using; if you have trouble, always take a look at the user icon in the top-right on your chrome window to make sure you're using the right profile.
Problems with Profiles
Seeing School Restrictions with Personal Account, or Seeing Personal Email in School Profile
The user icon shown in the top-right of the browser should always match the user icon shown in the top-right of the Google or Gmail webpages (A).
However, it is possible to be signed in to multiple Google accounts within a Chrome profile. In (B) above, my personal Gmail account is linked within my school Chrome profile. This would make it possible for me to see my personal email while still being within my school Chrome profile. However, it would be better to use a separate Chrome profile for my personal email.
Always make sure that the user icons in the browser and in Gmail match, and that you do not have multiple Google accounts linked into a single Chrome profile.
